DESCRIPTION:
|
Frederick Lee, painter of landscape and rural life, lived for much of his life in his native Devon, but painted numerous views in Scotland, Wales and the West Country; he died in South Africa. Lee exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1824 until 1870, including five views of Gibraltar. He sometimes collaborated with Thomas Sidney Cooper and Sir Edwin Landseer.
This exceptional work depicts O’Hara’s Tower, just visible at the highest point of Gibraltar, above the plateau of Windmill Hill. It was named after Lieutenant General Charles O’Hara, Governor of Gibraltar 1787-1799, nicknamed ‘Old Cock of the Rock’; he hoped that it would enable him to see the Spanish ships as they left Cadiz. O’Hara, known for his hospitality, wit and charm, was very popular in Gibraltar and often entertained on a lavish scale.
