DESCRIPTION:
|
Jawlensky was living in Munich since 1896 together with Marianne von Werefkin and Helene
Nesnakomoff. He had travelled to France on numerous occasions. During one of those trips, in 1905,
when he participated at the Salon d'Autommne, he met Matisse and discovered the paintings of the
Fauves, which greatly impressed him.
In 1909 Jawlensky founded 'the Neue Künstlervereinigung München' with Kandinsky, Münter,
Werefikin, Erbslöh and Kubin. The group exhibited their works in December of the same year at the
Moderne Galerie Thannhäuser. During the summer they worked together in Murnau, as they had
done already in the previous two years.
The regular visits to Murnau offered them a plethora of motives for landscape paintings. Back in the
city Jawlensky led an animated social life, went to parties, visited concerts and danced at carnival
balls. On Sundays he welcomed artists and composers at home. Amongst them he found the models
for his most impressive and colourful figure paintings, of which the 'Spanish woman' is a striking
example.
