DESCRIPTION:
|
Provenance: private collection. The artwork was authenticated by Juliet Wilson-Bareau; and, Mrs. Caroline Elam identified the original composition. During his training at Thomas Couture's, Manet produced reproductions of Venetian and Spanish artists exhibited at the Louvre. He then took a trip to Italy; the sketch nevertheless, brings proof he stayed in Rome: it shows two executioners flagellating Christ, on the left of the composition painted by Sebastiano del Piombo for the Borgherini Chapel in Montorio. This simple, quick draft in which shapes seem to move by way of the luminous contrasts, is typical of Manet's reproductions of the Masters, whom he referred to throughout his career in most of his own compositions.
