A significant but under-recognized California ceramist, Joel Edwards has produced powerfully expressive utilitarian pottery over the past forty years. Inspired simultaneously by the gestural force of such Abstract Expressionist painters as Franz Kline and Willem de Kooning and the energetic brushwork of the Japanese Sumi painters, Edwards creates monumental ceramic forms which meld Eastern and Western styles and philosophies.
Joel Edwards studied at the Brooklyn Museum School, Brooklyn, New York and received his M.F.A. at Otis Art Institute, Los Angeles, California. He was in the first group of students that studied with Peter Voulkos. He exhibited at the Nationals in
1956, 1960 and 1966. He is in the Long Beach Museum of Art in Long Beach, California.
Edwards has said the following of his work: "In my almost constant creation of pottery, I endeavor to find that slight variation of form that keeps me alert and creative. A covered jar is a covered jar but my desire is to make this form go beyond this limitation of utility into the realm of beauty to be admired and enjoyed."
