Image Date: 1938
Print Date: 1958-65
With photographer's stamp on verso and a pencil note from Martine Franke, president of the Foundation Henri Cartier-Bresson, that authorizes the print for sale. That is important, because reportedly the Foundation has been challenging the ownership of certain Cartier-Bresson images as they come up for sale. This is a very early printing of this important image. It was given to a fellow photographer (in early 1966), but was clearly made earlier. The print appears to be from the late 1950s or very early 1960s. See: Pollack, The Picture History of Photography, p.574-575; Galassi, Henri Cartier-Bresson: The Early Work (MoMA), fig.36; Henri Cartier-Bresson, The Man, the Image, and the World: A Retrospective, pl.69; Brenson, Henri Cartier-Bresson (Thames & Hudson, 2006), pl.27. Shipping and insurance costs will be added to the price and must be paid for by the buyer. Pennsylvania and New York buyers must pay appropriate sales tax. International clients are responsible for their VAT and other custom's oriented charges.
