DESCRIPTION:
|
The present work is from Giordano’s early oeuvre, ca. 1660, when he is still very much under the influence of the Riberesque style. The somber tonal balance and the intense air of the subject are particularly typical. Two other works from the same period, which exhibit a very similar intellectual preoccupation, are a portrait of the philosopher Cratete, oil on canvas, 113 x 90, now in the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte, Rome (no. 1254, Ferrari & Scavizzi, op. cit., no. A136, fig. 212) and a Philosopher, 104 x 89 cm, now in the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, Buenos Aires (no. 2858, Ferrari & Scavizzi, op. cit., no. A135, fig. 218). There is also a second version of the present painting catalogued in Ferrari & Scavizzi (no. A134, fig. 217) as having been in several Italian private collections in the 1960-70s, with current whereabouts unknown. The differences between the two versions appear minimal, with ours displaying perhaps a greater detail in the rendering of the background.
