DESCRIPTION:  Israeli artist Leora Laor began her career working as a freelance photographer while studying film, television and history at Tel-Aviv University (1973-1977). Over the next two years Laor added production and still photography in television and films to her resume. Laor moved to the United States in 1979. She studied photography at the School of Visual Arts before going on to the New School of social Research in 1981, where she developed under the tutelage of Austrian born photographer Lisette Model.
At this time Laor moved to the East Village, amidst the thriving art scene of the 1980’s. She became a staff photographer at Oggi Domani gallery, then the only photography gallery in the East Villag. In 1983 Laor had a one-person show at Oggi Domani, joining the likes of Zeke Berman and Jimmy De Sana. During these years Laor documented the neighborhood’s changing character, from architectural imagery and street scenes to lively social gatherings at galleries and clubs. This work was featured in the “New Galleries in the East Village” exhibition at Artists space and “Limbo” at PS1.
By the mid 80’s Laor also began to exhibit her work at Bess Cutler gallery in Soho, where she was given two solo shows. Laor also participated in several important group shows including : “Landscapes and Mindscapes”, an exhibition of contemporary American photography organized by the American Cultural center, in Brussels.

Laor’s work can be found in many collections both public and private. In 2002 she made a return to fine art photography, with a number of series that were shot in Israel. In this new setting Laor is once more motivated by a sense of pictorial wonder and urban alienation. Her unique vision and artistic technique permit these qualities to emanate form her photographs.
