Intervals between objects are as important as the objects themselves to Welliver. In Midday Barren, 1983-84,… Welliver seems more interested in the intervals between the rocky outcroppings than he is in the outcroppings themselves; these interval relationships seem naturally random; certainly they are systematically contrived… There is far more structural design in these works than immediately meets the eye. –Frank H.
