Rhythms and contrasts captivate artist Erik Tiemens as he looks toward Tuxis Island. At low tide, rocks of a sea wall become eloquent as waves, their forms articulate in light and pools of water. Beyond the rocks, the Sound shimmers with sensuous luminosity. In the distance, the charming island rises piquantly against soft drifts of cloud. Highlights, shadows, and the eye-catching shapes of sail-boats at anchor bring vitality to the surface while blues of sea and sky lend a radiant mood to the scene. The artist’s fine brushwork gives perfect expression to his graceful drawing and sophisticated color.
Tiemens has distinguished himself as part of George Lucas’s "Star Wars" creative team, also winning numerous honors for his work on "Star Trek Voyager;" "Indiana Jones;" "Jurassic Park;" "Shrek" and other icons of contemporary cinematic culture.
He began his training in 1987 at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, winning a full scholarship, and studying with artists Richard Wilson and Burne Hogarth. He graduated with Distinction in 1990; that same year he was selected to paint the official portrait of Mary Pickford which is now is in the collection of the Autry Western Heritage Museum, Los Angeles. Sargent, Degas, and Homer are among the painters Tiemens cites as major influences; photographers Steichen and Steiglitz have also helped shape his vision.
