DESCRIPTION:  In early 1891 Brangwyn, with his friend the painter William Hunt, was commissioned by the dealer T. J. Larkin to travel to South Africa to produce work for an exhibition at The Japanese Gallery at 28 New Bond Street. Larkin’s intention was that the two painters should spend a year travelling and painting in South Africa before returning. As it turned out, and to Larkin’s chagrin, their £500 of expenses lasted but five months. The majority of the 55 pictures painted for the exhibition were on identically-sized, fielded panels that Brangwyn carried in a specially made carrying case that enabled him to move them about when still wet. The present picture is highly typical of the work carried out on the South African journey, and may be regarded as the apogee of his work as a tonal painter
