DESCRIPTION:
|
circa 1899
The church of St Jacques in Dieppe attracted and absorbed Sickert’s interest over many years and was the subject of one of the four paintings commissioned for Monsieur Mantren’s restaurant. Wendy Baron lists eight paintings on canvas and seven on panel of this view, besides the largest version done for the commission, and many drawings and watercolours. Other aspects of the church appear in further paintings, watercolours and drawings.
When the commission was completed, Mantren immediately sold the paintings to a young expatriate American musician then living in Dieppe, Frederick Fairbanks.
