Wolf Kahn  (American/German, 1927)

whitespace
German-born artist Wolf Kahn (American/German, b.1927) is best known for his landscape paintings that combine the traditions of Realism and Color Field abstraction to create expressive, atmospheric works. Kahn was born in Stuttgart, and at the age of 13 moved to the United States, where he studied art in high school and, while serving in the Navy, worked as a studio assistant to prominent Abstract artist Hans Hofmann (German, 1880-1966). After graduating from the University of Chicago, Kahn worked with other Hofmann students to form a gallery called The Hansa, where he began exhibiting his work regularly in the mid-1950s. Kahn is acclaimed as an expert colorist; Hofmann’s teachings on the rhythms created from juxtapositions of color are reflected in Kahn’s luminous, ethereal landscapes, based on sites ranging from the United States to Italy to Kenya. Kahn has been honored with a Fulbright Scholarship, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and an award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. His works can be found in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C. Kahn currently lives and works in Vermont.
