1840 - 1845   It is believed Sonntag studied for a short period with G. Frankenstein at the Cincinnati Academy of Fine Arts in the early 1840s
1852   Commissioned to paint a series of scenery of the Allegheny mountains for the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Company
1853   Made his first trip to Europe
1855 - 1856   Lived in Florence, Italy
1857   Settled in New York, NY
1860   Associate at the National Academy of Design
1861   Academician at the National Academy of Design
1869   His canvas The Blue Ridge from Near Luray was published engraved by R. Hinshelwood and published in Ladies Repository
1900   Died New York, NY
