William George Gillies Biography

Born in Haddington, near Edinburgh and studied at the Edinburgh College of Art.On winning a traveling scholarship he worked in the atelier of Andre Lhote in Paris and went on to visit Italy. For a brief time he worked in a Cubist manner but would later revert to a more traditional style

Returned to Scotland in 1925 and taught first in Inverness and then at his alma mater in Edinburgh where he eventually became head of painting. Although he experimented with portraiture in his early career he concentrated on landscapes and still lifes, with frequent depictions of the Lothian, Fife and Border regions. His artistic influence over his forty year career had a profound affect on Scottish art of the twentieth century
