Sylvie Cantin’s contemporary works originate from conceptual aesthetics and research projects undertaken around 1984 – a decisive year during which experiments with a variety of materials and techniques shaped Sylvie Cantin’s early career as a window and display designer, and her later forays as an artist. Consistently though her creations and designs privileged quality and aesthetic sensibility.

It is through Sylvie Cantin’s commercial work that began her exploration of the many possibilities and techniques specific to paper, a medium which became her sole inspiration from 1988 onward.

As paper is a central issue in Sylvie Cantin’s work, it seems crucial to stress that she experiences its possibilities as a survival and surviving element, just as her work in progress goes through multi-stage technical searches and philosophical theses. What comes out of this is a limited series of evidential pieces that are witness of her quest, such as a series of clocks (fragile, capturing time), credences (foget-me-not samples and reunion remembrances), bowls and vases (still life) chairs (to rely on) frames (forever still)… Lost and found memories and ultimately, Living Things.
