Stephen Walter  (British, 1975)

whitespace
Stephen Walter (British, b.1975) is a print-maker whose works are an investigation into obsessive drawing, semiotics, and the phenomenon of place. A graduate of Manchester Metropolitan University and the Royal College of art, he is perhaps best-known for his series of hand-drawn maps, done in enormous detail and layered with both visual and textual information. Each work is an intricate world in itself; a tangle of words and symbols that make up a complex of hidden meanings and wider contradictions. Through drawing, photography and printmaking, his artworks explore the meaning of objects, the glory of maps, our place in the world, and the potential legacy that we bequeath to future generations. His major project The Island: London Series, was published by TAG Fine Arts in 2008 and received substantial critical acclaim. In 2010, he was one of just two living artists to be included in Magnificent Maps: Power, Propaganda and Art at the British Library, and in 2012, he was commissioned by the London Transport Museum to create London Subterranea for their major group exhibition Mind the Map. Walter’s work has been acquired for the Government Art Collection, and been shown in a number of prestigious institutions, including the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Courtauld Institute of Art in London, England.
