The dominant themes in Bresdin’s work include scenes of figures in fantastical landscapes, peasant interiors and Biblical subjects, all depicted with an abundance of minute detail. Another of his favourite subjects were depictions of small villages and exterior views of peasant huts, a milieu with which he was familiar from his upbringing as the son of a tanner in the small village of Montrelais, on the Loire between Nantes and Angers. Bresdin himself lived a peripatetic life, changing his address every few months, and these complex, highly detailed drawings of villages, houses, farms, inns and fantastic chateaux must have seemed, at times, the fabric of a world quite removed from his own humble existence.
