Robert Gober  (American, 1954)

whitespace
Robert Gober (American, b.1954) creates sculptures of objects and human bodies that draw on Surrealism, Pop Art, Folk Art, and numerous other sources. Born in Connecticut, Gober studied art at Middlebury College in Vermont and at the Tyler School of Art in Rome. He creates photographs, prints, and drawings, and occasionally curates exhibitions of other artists’ work, but is primarily known for his sculptures. Among Gober’s most famous works are sculptures of sinks incorporated into a variety of contexts, and of disconcerting body parts that seemingly emerge from a wall or corner. Though some sculptures appear as though they are Dada “ready-mades,” he fabricates all of his work in his studio, either alone or with the aid of his assistants. Gober participated in the 2001 Venice Biennial and has held several solo museum exhibitions, including an acclaimed retrospective in 2007 at the Schaulager museum in Switzerland. The artist currently lives and works in New York City.
