Ricardo Brugada y Panizo studied at the Escuela de Bellas Artes de Barcelona under the artistic direction of Antonio Caba. In his travels through Rome, he familiarized himself with the classical works and in Paris he developed his own style. He is most famous for his depictions of Andalusian life. 'The Flower Garden' is very typical of his style in that it focuses on a typically southern Spanish maiden, as denoted by her shawl. The courtyard is also indigenous to the region in that it has a Muslim architectural influence, which can only be found in Andalusia. Brugada y Panizo eventually taught as a professor at the Escuela de Bellas Artes de Cádiz, Córdoba, and Barcelona.
