1913   Born in Buntingford, Hertfordshire, England, UK
1933 - 1936   Trained as an architect
1936 - 1939   Teaching at the Architectural Association in London and working as an architect until the outbreak of World War II
1944   Beginning to sculpt without any formal training
1941 - 1945   Working as a blacksmith in Iping, West Sussex, UK
1950   Beginning to work as a Sculptor full-time
1950 - 1953   Working at the University of Leeds as the first Gregory Fellow in Sculpture. Matured as a sculptor, turning to modelling in clay, plaster or wax instead of welding, and casting in a thin-shell bronze technique of his own
1953   First prize in an international competition for a monument to the Unknown Political Prisoner, which culminated in a working model (h. 2.24 m, 1955-6; London, Tate)
