Qi Zhilong  (Chinese, 1962)

whitespace
Qi Zhilong (Chinese, b.1962), one of the leading figures of Gaudy Art in China, was born in Hohhot, Inner Mongolia, China. In 1992, four years after he graduated from the Central Academy of Fine Arts, Qi moved into the Summer Palace Artist Village in Beijing where Political Pop and Cynical Realism just started gaining popularity. With the intention to revolt against the Political Pop movement, Qi started his consumer icons series, using oil and paint to commercialize the idealistic icons created by Political Pop, as well as the icons that it was trying to confront. In November 1992, Qi sold his first painting of the consumer icons series. In the beginning of 1993, he was signed by the Schoeni Gallery in Hong Kong who worked with most of the top Contemporary Chinese artists at the time. However, after about 20 works of consumer icons, Qi gave up, because it was too often misunderstood as Political Pop. In 1995, Qi started a new series called Chinese girl. The stylish girl in swimsuit who had repeated herself so many times in consumer icons had now changed into a traditional Chinese hairstyle and a military uniform that recalls the memories of the Cultural Revolution. What remained was a touch of flirtatiousness in her smile. This Chinese girl series had won Qi Zhilong international reputation and commercial success. In 1996, along with the Model from the Masses exhibition curated by Li Xianting, the “Godfather of Chinese avant-garde art,” Qi’s Chinese Girl made her first public appearance in Beijing, Hong Kong, Miami, and Basel. But within China, he was accused of wooing the Western market with the iconic military suit. 2008 was a turning point in Qi’s style. He gave his series and his girl a second makeover, producing the acclaimed Chinese Girl 2008 without the military uniform or the mischievous smile. Qi lives and works in Beijing.
