Peter Schuyff  (Dutch, 1958) 

Peter Schuyff (Dutch, b.1958) is a painter and sculptor associated with the Neo-Geo movement and best known for his abstract paintings of intertwining, ribbon-like patterns. Born in Baarn, the Netherlands, he grew up in Canada and studied at the Vancouver School of Art. During the 1980s, Schuyff was part of the art scene in the East Village in New York and the Neo-Geo movement, which sought to continue the legacy of geometric abstraction developed during the 1960s. In his paintings, Schuyff builds up thin layers of pain to create luminescent surfaces of pattern. He also made a series of sculptures resembling totem poles, inspired by his travels through jungles in New Guinea, the Amazon, and Burma. Schuyff has carved pencils and baseball bats into twisting, corkscrew-like forms, and repeated the same process on a larger scale by carving out logs. In his recent work, Schuyff superimposes his abstract patterns on found paintings. His work has been exhibited at the Centre d’Art Contemporain in Geneva and the Sperone Gallery in Rome, and his work is held in several public collections, including the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles and the Daimler Contemporary in Berlin. He currently lives and works in Amsterdam.
