Paul P. (Canadian, b.1977) is a painter and draughtsman known for his landscape and figurative work incorporating a range of influences, from 19th-century artists, such as John Singer Sargent (American, 1856–1925) and James Abbott McNeill Whister (American, 1834–1903), to gay pornography. P. earned his BFA from York University, and was a studio assistant for artist Stephen Andrews. In 2001, he exhibited his first portraits of young men, many of which were inspired by source material from the Canadian Lesbian and Gay Archive. In 2003, he had his first solo show in New York at Daniel Reich Gallery, and in 2006, moved to Paris for several years. P.’s work is in the collections of many major institutions, including The Museum of Modern Art and the Art Gallery of Ontario. His work was also featured in the 2014 Whitney Biennial. The artist lives and works in Paris and New York.
