Nicholas Nixon  (American, 1947)

Nicholas Nixon (American, b. 1947) is a photographer best known for his work in documentary and portraiture photography. Nixon studied American literature at the University of Michigan and received an MFA in photography from the University of New Mexico in 1974. Since completing his post-graduate studies, Nixon has worked as an independent photographer. Using an 8-by-10-inch camera, Nixon has explored many traditional themes of documentary photography: the ill, elderly, and family. His use of the large-format camera poignantly captures the expression and detailed textures of the people he photographs. The series People with AIDS, begun in 1987, was renowned for its stark honesty and aesthetic significance. One of the first and most controversial mainstream exhibits on AIDS, the series was noteworthy for its austere examination of the dehumanizing effects of the disease. Nixon’s best known work, however, is The Brown Sisters, his ongoing portrait series of his wife and her three sisters. Since 1975, Nixon has produced a single portrait of the four sisters every year, with the sisters consistently arranged in age order from left to right. Photographed at various locations around the East Coast, the series explores the nature of long and complex human relationships in revealing the gradual shifts in appearance and dynamics among the four women. The recipient of two John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowships, three National Endowment for the Arts Photography Fellowships, and a Massachusetts Council for the Arts “New Works” Grant, Nixon teaches photography at the Massachusetts College of Art, Boston. His work has been exhibited at numerous international galleries and museums, including MoMA, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.
