Michael Ray Charles (American, b.1967) is a painter from Lafayette, LA. He graduated from high school in 1985, and proceeded to enroll in classes at McNeese State University in Lake Charles, LA. Charles studied advertising and design, and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1989. He continued his education at the University of Texas at Austin and received a Master of Fine Arts degree in 1993. His education led to a teaching position at the University of Texas.

In 2001, Charles was part of the first group of artists to participate in the PBS series titled Art21. The series highlighted top artists of the 21st century. Charles was a consultant on the making of a Spike Lee film called Bamboozled in the year 2000. The artist was listed as one of the top future African American scholars under the age of 40 in the Black Issues in Higher Education in 2003, and he was a panelist for the National Endowment for the Arts. Charles is also a juror for the Bush Artist Fellowship in St. Paul, MN, and the Inaugural Biennial Underground Railroad Exhibition at Northern Kentucky University, Highland Heights, KY. In 2006, he participated in a documentary called Race is the Place. Charles also showed his work in exhibitions at Cotthem Gallery in Spain and the PMMK Museum of Modern Art in Belgium. He currently hosts many lectures and has shown his work in multiple exhibits, both individually and with other groups.

His work has appeared in New York City, Paris, Belgium, Germany, Norway, Santa Fe, New Mexico, Spain, and Miami. He has been the topic of books, newspapers, and magazines. His work appears in museums such as the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, the San Antonio Museum of Art, the Austin Museum of Art, the Knox Art Gallery, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Charles is currently a professor of art at the University of Texas at Austin.
