Martin Rico y Ortega Biography
Martin Rico y Ortega was born in Madrid on 12th November 1833 and died in Venice on 13th April 1908. He was a friend of Daubigny and was one of the first Spanish artists to paint his subjects in situ and not in the studio. He settled in Paris and exhibited there, winning medals in 1878 and 1889.
Ortega is predominantly recognised for small, highly detailed paintings with a focus on architecture and light. This is a very good example of his work, it is full of light and atmosphere and shows his ability to paint with accurate observation.
He is represented in museums in New York (Metropolitan), Madrid, Reims and Seville.
