Louis Braquaval, landscape painter, was born at Lille in 1856. He studied at Honfleur under the great Eugene Boudin, an artist whose paintings of the beaches and coastline of Normandy had become famous throughout Europe and who is now perceived as one of the ‘fathers’ of Impressionism. Like his master, Braquaval painted mainly views of Normandy while also painting the occasional scene in Paris; he also painted a series of snow scenes. He did not exhibit until relatively late in life, showing his works at the Salon de la Nationale from 1907-1914, the Salon d’Automne from 1909-10 and also at the Salon des Independants. Nonetheless his paintings are in many French provincial museums. Works entitled Place du March Dunkerque, Effet de Neige, Coucher de Soleil Baie de la Somme, and Effet de Neige Saint-Valery are all in the Musee Municipale of Amiens while five further works are in the museum of Mulhouse. Braquaval died in 1919.
