Kerry James Marshall  (American, 1955)

whitespace
Kerry James Marshall (American, b. October 17, 1955) was born in Birmingham, AL, but grew up in Los Angeles, CA. He graduated from the Otis College of Art and Design in 1978, earning a BFA. During this undergraduate work, he developed his artistic skills under Arnold Mesches (American, b.1923).

Marshall is a former teacher at the University of Illinois at Chicago's School of Art and Design. He received an honorary doctorate in 1999 from the Otis College of Art and Design. Painting in a Realist style, he depicts dark figures that are confronting general racial stereotypes, many of which show the "Black Power" ideology popular in that time era. In these paintings, especially his Souvenir series, tribute is given to the civil rights era. Marshall has used many types of mediums, including collage, drawings, murals, and even comic books. His Rythm Mastr comic showed cyberspace elite against African sculptures that come to life. Exhibitions of his work have appeared in New York's Whitney Museum of American Art, in 1997, New York's Studio Museum, in 1986, and in Chicago's Museum of Contemporary Art, in 1996. There was a traveling exhibition of his creative works that began at the University of Chicago in 1998 and went to the Brooklyn Museum of Art, The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Institute for Contemporary Art, The Santa Monica Museum of Art, and then to the Boise Museum of Art. This traveling art show was put on by the Renaissance Society. In 1997, Marshall received the MacArthur "genius grant,” a MacArthur Fellowship from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation for exceptional merit and creative works. The award gives a half-million dollars, paid out over five years, to the winner.

Kerry James Marshall currently lives in Chicago, IL. He is married to Cheryl Lynn Bruce, an actress, and is represented by New York's Jack Shainman Gallery and Koplin Del Rio Gallery of Culver City, CA.
