Julio Alpuy  (American/Uruguayan, 1919-2009)

Julio Alpuy (Uruguayan, b.1919) is best known for his brightly-colored Cubist landscapes and still-life paintings. Born in Tacuarembo, Alpuy moved to Montevideo in 1935, and became familiar with Constructivism in the 1940s while working with fellow painter Joaquin Torres-García (Uruguayan, 1874–1949), and studying at his workshop, El Taller Torres-García. Torres-García introduced a new form “Universal Constructivism” into Central and South America, combining Modernist grids with motifs and traditions from pre-Colombian sources, in opposition to simply mimicking the Modern Art of Europe and North America. By the age of 24, Alpuy was teaching at El Taller, and further developed his own iconography of geometric shapes and primary colors in early works with densely-layered imagery. His early paintings consisted of still lifes and landscapes, richly executed with heavy impasto. Gradually, his works became more strictly Cubist, while maintaining the austerity of earlier works through heavy black outlines, accentuating the bright colors enclosed. His later works incorporate more organic forms, painted in a looser, expressionistic style, with a more deliberate emphasis on individual motifs. In 1961, Alpuy moved to New York, where he still resides today. There, Alpuy has received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the New York Council for the Arts, and the Gottlieb Foundation.
