Jean-Marc Bustamante  (French, 1951)

Jean-Marc Bustamante (French, b.1952) is a renowned photographer and painter, especially in Europe. His work presents a perfect synthesis of past experiences and artistic visual language. His recent plexiglass paintings explore concepts of light and color to depict visual landscapes with a strong appeal and poetical impact. Bustamante was born in Toulouse, France. He worked with photographer William Klein (American, b.1928) in the 1970s. His series of photos on different parts of Barcelona, called Tableaux, revolutionized the perception of photography as a medium of artistic expression in France. The Tableaux is recognized as a creative combination of photography and painting. From 1983 to 1987, he collaborated with French sculptor Bernard Bazile (French, b.1952), producing artistic works in the name of BazileBustamante. The collaboration gave rise to an artistic style based on codes and signs system. The two artists, however, split up in 1987.

Bustamante continues to undertake photographic projects, though intermittently, to date. His projects include a series of over 120 landscapes incorporating fragments of photographs that aspire to describe a single unified subject. Though strongly reminiscent of commercial advertising, his works revolve around single subjects in a series of related images. A fine example is his 1995 series titled Something is Missing, which was exhibited in individual groups of two to 12 images. This series does not cover any specific region or time but evokes the viewer to find a place and time for the images in his or her mind. Bustamante has earned a number of accolades and recognition awards throughout his artistic career. In 2008, he was awarded the Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur medal. He represented France in 2003 at the 50th Venice Biennale.

Bustamante’s major solo exhibitions include Dead Calm at the Fruitmaker Gallery in Edinburgh, Pedigree in 2009 at Galeria Filemona Soares in Lisbon, Protugal, Jean-Marc Bustamante: La Chambre des Saintes in 2008 at the Galerrie Thaddaeus Ropac in Paris, France, and the Jean-Marc Bustamante: Lava II in 2008 at the Palais des Beaux-Arts, Brussels. Jean-Marc Bustamante works and lives in Paris, France.
