Jane Hammond  (American, 1950)

whitespace
Jane Hammond (American, b.1950) is a contemporary artist who works in print matter, paint, and sculpture to create a wide array of art that is often based on dreams and literature. Hammond was born in Bridgeport, CT. She studied biology and poetry at Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts and earned a BA in Art in 1972. She also studied ceramics at Arizona State University and earned an MFA in Sculpture from the University of Wisconsin.

She moved to New York in 1977 and created an image bank of more than 276 images, including everything from puppetry and magic to alchemy and scientific manuals. She is primarily known for her collaborations with authors and other artists, in which she transforms their written works into visual art. She worked with poet John Ashbery (American, b.1927) to create 62 pieces based on titles of his suggestion. She also collaborated with poet Raphael Rubinstein (American, b.1925). Hammond had her first solo exhibition in 1989 at Exit Art in New York, and since then her popularity has grown significantly. She has been exhibited not only throughout the United States, but also in Spain, Italy, Sweden, and Holland. Her work can be seen at Jose Freire Fine Art in New York, the Orlando Museum of Art in Florida, and the Freedman Gallery in Pennsylvania.

Hammond finds inspiration from other artists and her own imagination. For decades, Hammond limited her art to images from the image bank she created in the 1970s and 1980s, but recently she has moved beyond her image bank. Some of her more famous works include Masindi and Fallen. These works use a variety of painting and sculpture styles as well as unique layering and texturing. Fallen is made up of hundreds of individual leaves, each of which carries the name of a soldier killed in Iraq. It is a unique construction made of foam, cotton, rag paper, acrylic paint, sumi ink, archived digital inkjet prints, and gouache. The artist currently lives and works in New York, NY.
