Studied at Dusseldorf Academy and then traveled extensively throughout Germany, Switzarland, Italy, and Norway

First exhibited in Berlin, where he had many subsequent shows
|

1870 |
|
Came to United States and settled in Philadelphia. Quickly established himself as a leading regional painter and exhibited at the Philadelphia Academy of Fine Arts

Herzog and son Lewis held a joint exhibition for the occasion of Herzog's 100th year celebration
