Henry Moore  (British, 1898-1986)

whitespace
Henry Moore (British, 1898–1986) is often considered the foremost British sculptor of the 20th century. In 1919, he studied at the Leeds School of Art, and earned a scholarship to the Royal College in London in 1921. From 1925 until 1931, Moore taught at the Royal College, and in 1928, received his first commission. The project, which was a relief work for the London Underground Headquarters, illustrated Moore's interest in primitive art. Moore's style was inspired by Sir Jacob Epstein (British, 1880–1959) and Eric Gill (British, 1882–1940), among other British sculptors.

His works from the late 1920s demonstrate Epstein's influence, as well as Moore's appreciation of Mayan art. In 1933, Moore moved to the Chelsea School of Art. By the 1940s, he had established an international audience for his work, and in 1946, Moore visited New York for the first time for the start of a retrospective exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art. He was awarded the International Sculpture Prize at the Venice Biennale in 1948. From 1949 until 1956, he served as a Trustee of the Tate Gallery in London. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, Moore continued to receive significant public and private commission offers from abroad. In 1972, one of Moore's most important and well-received exhibitions took place at Michelangelo's Forte di Belvedere near Florence. His sculptures, while usually abstract, often portray the human figure. Moore is perhaps best known for sculpting reclining figures and mothers with children. His works are displayed in many sculpture gardens and public locations around the world.
