Henri Saint Clair was born in Arras, Pas de Calais in a well-to-do family in 1899. His interest and skill in painting was cultivated during the time in which he worked as an art restorer in the Normandy region of France near the picturesque port of Honfleur.
Most easily classified as a Post-Impressionist, Saint Clair has only recently been recognized as one of the more talented fine artists who depicted French coastal life. His picturesque paintings of the beaches of Normandy include colorful scenes of families and friends in period costume on the beach in such charming places as Deauville, Honfleur and Trouville.
Saint Clair’s preferred medium was oil on painter’s board. This flat, smooth surface contributes to the uniqueness of the artist’s style compared to many of his contemporaries, who by and large executed their works on canvas.
