Presenting a delicate composition with expressive lines and strokes, this piece is a tribute to the dancer. A dancer decked out in full attire poses in front of a mirror, examining her figure and form. Matisse addresses issues such as beauty, vanity, and self-awareness in this exquisite print. He offers us a multidimensional look at the dancer, as she examines herself in the mirror; we witness the dancer both from her side and from the front as reflected in the mirror. This piece retains a certain voyeuristic feel, as we get the impression that we are witnessing a private moment of either scrutiny or narcissism on the dancer's behalf.
Created in 1927, this original lithograph on Japan paper is hand signed by Henri Matisse (Le Cateau-Cambrésis, 1869 - Nice, 1954) in pencil in the lower right and numbered in pencil in the lower right 39/50.
