Henri Joseph Harpignies Biography
1819   Born in Valenciennes on July 28 to a family of Belgian descent
1848   In his late twenties, he decided to abandon a career as a travelling salesman and begin training as an artist in the studio of the landscape painter Jean-Alexis Achard.
1850   He made a trip through Germany, the Netherlands and Italy
1852   Returns to France to establish his own studio in Paris and met the artists Jean-Leon Gerome and Jean-Louis Hamon, both of whom were at the beginnings of their careers.
1853   Harpignies makes his Salon debut, exhibiting views of Capri and Valenciennes, and he continued to show regularly at the Salons throughout his very long and productive career
1863   Makes his second visit to Italy, remaining there until 1865,and this sojourn was also to have a significant effect on his later work.
1866   Won a medal
1868   Won a medal

1875   Received the Legion d’honneur
1900   Grand Prix at the Exposition Universelle
