Henri Joseph Harpignies Biography

Born in Valenciennes on July 28 to a family of Belgian descent
|

1848 |
|
In his late twenties, he decided to abandon a career as a travelling salesman and begin training as an artist in the studio of the landscape painter Jean-Alexis Achard.

1850 |
|
He made a trip through Germany, the Netherlands and Italy
|
|
1852 |
|
Returns to France to establish his own studio in Paris and met the artists Jean-Leon Gerome and Jean-Louis Hamon, both of whom were at the beginnings of their careers.

|
Harpignies makes his Salon debut, exhibiting views of Capri and Valenciennes, and he continued to show regularly at the Salons throughout his very long and productive career
|

1863 |
|
Makes his second visit to Italy, remaining there until 1865,and this sojourn was also to have a significant effect on his later work.
