Born 21st September 1815, Hendrik Reekers was the pupil of his father Johannes Reekers the Elder (1790 – 1858) and G.J.J. van Os, was inscribed in the Haarlem Stadsteken-school at the age of 15 until 1834, and became a teacher himself in 1837. He worked in Haarlem most of his career, but visited Paris and more frequently Brussels, where the dealer Nieuwenhuys sold a great part of his works in the 1840’s.

Works by Reekers were exhibited at the Hague, Amsterdam and London from 1832 to just before his death at the tragically early age of 38. They are now to be found in the Amsterdams Historisch Museum, the Rijksmuseum, the Teylers Museum Haarlem, the Museum Boymans-van Beuningen, Rotterdam, the Musee Pescatore in Luxembourg, Fitzwilliam Cambridge and Cheltenham Art Gallery.
