Harriette Bowdoin studied art under Henry Snell and Elliott Daingerfield in New York, where she spent most of her life. Further instruction came from Frank Brangwyn in London. Bowdoin knew the American post-impressionist Jane Peterson, who also studied with Brangwyn. The two women artists probably traveled to Venice together in 1908. Both show a similar technique with exciting color and bold, spontaneous brushwork. Bowdoin exhibited her works at the Art Institute of Chicago (1911-18) at the National Academy of Design (1913-20), at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition, and at the Society of Independent Artists in 1917. She joined the National Association of Women Painters and Sculptors, the American Watercolor Society, and the New York Society of Painters. Bowdoin died in 1947.
