|
Boulanger was a noted French painter in the latter half of the 19th century. He was known for his paintings of historical subjects, as well as compositions taken from Greek and Roman mythology, neoclassism and Oriental (particularly Middle-Eastern) subjects. He was born in Paris and studied under Pierre Jules Jollivet. He also took courses in painting from Paul Delaroche. He entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1846 and won the prestigious Prix de Pome in 1849. Starting in 1848, he participated in the prestigious Salon de Paris and continued exhibiting there until 1875. He was an influential teacher and his art sold very well during his lifetime. In 1882 Boulanger was elected to full membership at the Academie des Beaux-Arts. Boulanger’s prints are in many noted public and private collections in both France and overseas.
