1825   Born in Livorno, Italy
1845   Apprentice to Giuseppe Baldini
1846   Moved to Florence where he first studied under Giuseppe Bezzuoli and, later in the year, at the Accadèmia di Belli Arti
1848   Interrupted his studies and participated as a courier, distributing leaflets for the Partito d'Azione, in the democratic anti-Austrian movement during the revolutionary years of 1848-1849
1850   Resumed his studies at the Accademia in Florence
1859   Won the competition for a patriotic battle scene, organized by the Concorso Ricasoli (national competition organized by the government of Bettino Ricasoli) with his painting Dopo la battaglia di Magenta (After the battle of Magenta) (completed in 1860-1861)
1859   Married Settimia Vannucci in July 1859 and settled in Florence
1869   Started giving private painting lessons and taught twice weekly at the Florentine Academy (where one of his late students was Amedeo Modigliani)
1870   Received an award at the Parma exhibition of 1870 for his battle scene Prince Amadeo Feritio at Custoza
1873 - 1876   Received a bronze medal at the World Exhibition of Vienna in 1873 for the painting Horse Market at Terracina and again at the Philadelphia World's Fair in 1876
1888   Promoted to Resident Professor of Drawing in the Accademia of Florence and was also named Professor of Figure Study at the School of Architecture
1889   Received an award at the exhibition at Cologne
1889   Received an honourable mention at the exhibitions in Paris
1900   Gold medal at the Exposition Universelle
1900   Became a member of the Accadèmia Albertina of Turin
1908   Died in Florence, Italy on August 30
