Gabriel Orozco  (American/Mexican, 1962) 

Gabriel Orozco (American/Mexican, born April 27, 1962) is a Contemporary painter, sculptor, and photographer known for re-framing everyday objects and exploring the boundary between public and private spheres. Born in Veracruz, Mexico, he studied at the Escuela Nacional de Arte Plásticas and Circulo de Bellas Artes. Orozco’s early work follows the tradition of the readymades of Marcel Duchamp (French, 1887–1968): Cats and Watermelons places 11 cans of cat food on top of watermelons, and Yogurt Cap is a series of nothing but clear lids with colored rims. Orozco’s interest in mapping and geometric patterns is evident in Horses Running Endlessly (1995), Oval with Pendulum (1996), as well as The Atomists (1996), a series of photographs cut from newspapers overlaid with circles and lines. Influenced by his extensive travels and the traditional art of Mexico, Orozco created terracotta works for documenta XI in 2002, questioning the role of crafts in a high art context. Orozco’s work has been exhibited in multiple international venues, including the Venice Biennale, Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, and the Serpentine Gallery in London. Orozco lives and works in New York and Mexico City.
