Frank Nitsche  (German, 1964)

Frank Nitsche (German, b.1964) is a Postmodern Abstractionist painter whose work focuses on futuristic Constructivism. Born in Görlitz, Germany, Nitsche studied art at Hochschule für Bildende Kunste in Dresden, Germany, from 1988 to 1995, earning his diploma and a MFA. In 1998, he was awarded a scholarship by the Kunstlerhaus Schloss Wiepersdorf to further his studies. Growing up in Dresden was a major inspiration in the development of his artistic talent. Dresden, once a beautiful city, experienced the brunt of the Second World War devastation and no amount of patching up and filling holes on its cityscape by the German government could restore its former beauty. It was in this kind of environment that Nitsche studied, along with fellow painters such as Thomas Scheibitz (German, b.1968) and Eberhard Havekost (German, b.1967).

Nitsche is recognized for his Abstract works that incorporate a combination of lines and loops crisscrossing each other to create complicated architectural structures. Most of his works are characteristically done on large canvas surfaces painted in subtle shades such as khaki, slate blue, or moss green with colorful accents.

Nitsche's artistic development was influenced by the fall of the Berlin Wall. He was living in Berlin in the 1990s and witnessed the city's accelerated transformation and architectural facelift. Nitsche's work tries to encompass this complicated period in the history of Germany. This is why his futuristic landscapes tend to spin contradictory ideas. One of his exhibitions was titled Die Unvereinbarkeit von Newtons Gravitationstheorie und der speziellen Relativitätstheorie, which refers to the contradiction between Newton's Gravitational Theory and the Theory of Relativity. Some of his solo exhibitions include Frank Nitsche: Hello China in 2011 at Brandenburgischer Kunstverein in Potsdam, I am Single at Nanzuka Underground in Tokyo, and Oeuvres Récentes in 2009 at Galerie Nathalie Obadia in Paris, France. He maintained a studio in San Francisco, CA, from 1998 to 1999, but he currently lives and paints from his home in Berlin, Germany.
