Fabian Marcaccio  (Argentine, 1963)

Fabian Marcaccio (Argentine, b.1963) is known for his works that tackle the concept of traditional painting in the digital age. Born to a native Argentine mother and Italian father in Rosario de Santa Fe, Argentina, Marcaccio infuses transcultural themes in his art. He attended the University of Philosophy in Rosario, and in 1985 won First Prize at the Premio Esso de Pintura y Dibujo in Buenos Aires. This prize granted him a scholarship to study at the Printmaking Workshop in New York City, where he still lives and works. Marcaccio’s style is quite unique in that it doesn’t fall into any one particular movement of Contemporary Art. Working within theories of traditional painting, he blends digital printing techniques, photography, and sculpture to create a hybrid he refers to as “paintants.” He explores numerous media and combines different forms of art in his environmental, structural canvas and animation Paintants. His Environmental Paintants are enormous, panoramic images that surround the viewer. In 2003, Marcaccio installed a 300 meter-long painting called Confine Paintant along the shores of Ghent, Belgium. He created this work en plein air, with the wind blowing sand onto the painting. It’s a two-sided piece, divided into nine parts mounted along the horizon, so that the viewer can literally weave in and out of it observing the painting against both the urban city and the vacant ocean. In 2001, Marcaccio received a project grant from the Wexner Center in Columbus, OH, for his collaboration with the architect Greg Lynn (American, b.1964) on Predator. He also received the Bernhard Heiliger Award for Sculpture in 2011.
