Enoc Perez  (Puerto Rican, 1967)

Enoc Perez (Puerto Rican, b.1967) is a contemporary artist best known for his paintings of architectural monuments that capture their utopian ideals. Perez was born in Puerto Rico as the son of an art critic; he spent most of his childhood vacations visiting art museums and learning art history. After moving to New York as a young man, he found himself inspired by the silkscreen works of Andy Warhol (American, 1928–1987). He earned a BFA degree from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY, and went on to receive an MFA in Fine Arts from Hunter College in New York, NY.

Much of Perez's intent is to convey pleasure and beauty to the viewer with his works. He considers the buildings he selects to paint to be metaphors and often refers to the paintings as portraits. His painting process is unique in that the brush never really touches the canvas, similar to printmaking. Although architectural monuments are his favorite subjects, he also paints nudes, still lifes, and cityscapes. Perez has painted the Seagram building, United Nations building, and Eero Saarinen's TWA terminal. One of his most popular works is Lever House (2010). This work was originally an oil on canvas and has been reproduced as a seven screen silk screen. It was displayed in the lobby of the actual Lever House in New York City. One of his best known series is simply titled New York (2006), and featured stark rooms with paintings of many well-known New York buildings hung upon the walls, creating a painting within a painting. The contemporary work was well received on exhibition as an inspired convergence of art and architecture. A recent collection titled Nudes (2011) was exhibited to positive reviews in London.

Perez is represented by Mitchell-Innes & Nash in New York and Faggionato Fine Arts in London. His work has been exhibited throughout Europe and New York. He has been reviewed in various publications such as The New York Times, Art in America, and Interview Magazine. Perez’s work is on permanent display at the Museum of Contemporary Art in San Juan, Puerto Rico, The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and Museum of Contemporary Art in North Miami, FL.
