Emily Carr

(Canadian, 1871–1945)

Emily Carr was a Canadian artist and writer known for her expressive paintings of coastal forests in British Columbia and the First Nation tribes that lived there. In some of her best-known works Carr depicted both totem poles and towering trees with a reverential eye. “Real art is religion, a search for the beauty of God deep in all things,” she once explained. Born on December 13, 1871 in Victoria, Canada, she went on to attend both the San Francisco Art Institute and the Westminster School of Art in London. After returning to Canada in the late 1890s, Carr began to frequent indigenous villages around Vancouver Island and write about their customs. A two year stay in to Paris in 1910, exposed the artist to the works of the Post-Impressionists and Fauvists, whose influence can be seen throughout Carr’s career. Over the following decades, she gained recognition from her peers such as the Group of Seven painter Lawren Harris as well as curators, leading to several exhibitions in Canada and abroad. The artist died on March 2, 1945 in Victoria, Canada. Notably in the 1980s, the Vancouver School of Art honored the late artist by renaming itself the Emily Carr University of Art and Design. Today, her works are held in the collections of the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa, the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto, and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C., among others.
