1912   Received first camera as a gift and began photographing birds and school athletic events
1920   Entered Harvard University to study chemical engineering
1924   Graduated from Harvard and entered Harvard Medical School
1926   Studied biochemistry at University of Cambridge, England
1927 - 1929   Returned to Harvard Medical School and received M.D. in 1929
1929 - 1939   Taught at Harvard Medical School
1939   Resigned from teaching to pursue photography
1941   Received a Guggenheim Fellowship to photograph birds in black-and-white and in color
1946   Became Photographer-at-Large for Audubon Magazine
1967   Received the Conservation Service Award from the U.S. Department of the Interior
1969   Awarded Honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree by Colby College, Waterville, Maine
1965 - 1971   Elected to the Sierra Club board of directors
1971   Became a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences
1979   Received an honorary Doctor of Science degree from Dickinson College, Carlisle, Pennsylvania
1990   Died on November 2 in Santa Fe
