David Kroll  (American, 1956)

David Kroll (American, b.1956) is an avant-garde Surrealist artist whose powerful use of color and blend of styles has gained him fame and recognition as one of the leading Postmodernist painters. Kroll was born in Phoenix, AZ, and received a BFA in Painting, Drawing, and Printmaking from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1980, and an MFA in Painting and Drawing from the School of the Art Institute in Chicago in 1986.

His brief stay in Chicago and subsequent move to Vashon Island, WA, played a great role in his connection to nature. Kroll's works mostly feature birds, fish, small animals, and insects, juxtaposed in still life with magnificent European and Asian vases, bowls, and cups. The paintings, with verdant backdrops of sepia-toned panoramas, arrest viewers with their attention to detail, achieved through laborious layering of oil and varnish on canvas or linen. Kroll's work impeccably mimics 19th-century Hudson River School and Vanitas still life pieces.

The artist's work is represented by seven art galleries in the United States, although his main dealer is the Grover/Thurston Gallery in Seattle, WA. The artist has held hundreds of single exhibitions from 1985 to 2010, and tens of group exhibitions during the same period. His recent paintings include The Egret and the Vase (2010), The Butterfly and Frog (2010), Koi (2009), and Nest and Audubon (2010). These resplendent pieces were exhibited in various galleries from 2009 to 2010, including the Robischon Gallery, in Denver, CO, Hidell/Brooks Gallery, in Charlotte, NC, Littlejohn Contemporary, in New York, NY, and at Grover/Thurston Gallery, in Seattle, WA (2010). His latest group exhibitions include Surface Tension, Tradition and Innovation in Contemporary Painting, which was held at the South Bend Museum of Art, in South Bend, IN, and Things Themselves, which was held at the Pelham Art Center, in Pelham, NY, in 2010. The artist is the recipient of numerous awards and accolades in painting, including the Jurors Prize from the Chicago Public Library Cultural Center (1990), the Artist Fellowship Award from the Illinois Arts Council (1991), and the NEA Regional Visual Arts Fellowship Award. Kroll currently lives and works in Chicago, IL.
