1936   Moved to Paris, where his brother Andre (Robert Capa) was working as a photojournalist
1937   Moved to New York to join the new Pix photo agency
1938   Began working in the Life darkroom
1946   After serving in the US Air Force, became a Life staff photographer
1954   Joined Magnum Photos after his brother's death
1956 - 1960   became a president of Magnum
1974   Founded the International Center of Photography, New York, NY
1975   Received a Honor Award from the American Society of Magazine Photographers
1986   Was awarded Leica Medal of Excellence
1990   Received a Peace and Culture Award from Sokka Gakkai International
1991   was awarded Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, France
1995   Became Honorary Member, the American Society of Museum Photographers
1995   Was awarded the Distinguished Career in Photography Award from the Friends of Photography
1999   Was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award in Photography from the Aperture Foundation
