Corneille  (Dutch, 1922-2010)

whitespace
Corneille (Dutch, 1922–2010) was a painter, draftsman, ceramicist, writer, and graphic artist. Corneille was born as Guillaume Corenelis Beverloo in Belgium to Dutch parents. He was co-founder of the avant-garde, post-war European art movement called Cobra, which was active between 1949 and 1952. The artists in this group drew their inspiration from Surrealism. Corneille is considered to be one of the most significant Modern graphic artists from the 20th century, and has been described as having developed a new poetic art with painting.

Corneille founded the Dutch Experimental Group in 1948 with his close friend Karel Appel (Dutch, 1921–2006). This group was later absorbed into the Cobra movement. Corneille studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam but was mostly self-taught. He created vibrant, expressionistic images with his paints, gouaches, and drawings. Corneille mostly painted landscapes until the 1960s, when his work became more Figurative in nature. This artist radicalized the Dutch art world in the early 1950s, making Modern Art embraceable. His great influences were Pablo Picasso (Spanish, 1881–1973) and Paul Klee (German, 1879–1940), but he claimed to have been most profoundly moved and connected to Vincent Van Gogh, since they shared a love of form, nature, and color. Corneille is buried in a plot near Van Gogh's grave in the Auvers-sur-Oise cemetery in France. Examples of his works are Nu et Chat, Nu +á l'Oiseau Rouge, Grande Effervescence Parmis les Oiseaux, and Reine des Sables.

Corneille's work is in the collections of the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco, the Cobra Museum of Modern Art in the Netherlands, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Dallas Museum of Art, and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. He was deeply influenced by his time in Africa, where he examined local art and collected masks that he would later use as themes for his work. Corneille's work remains available for purchase at the Heede & Moestrup Gallery in Copenhagen, Pygmalion in Maarssen, Netherlands, the Robinsons Art Gallery in Knokke-Zoute, Belgium, the VVdM Art Gallery-Collection in Hong Kong, the Whitford Fine Art in London, and the Michelle Champetier Gallery in Cannes. His work continues to sell well despite critiques of his later work being too automatic. Corneille died in Paris at the age of 88.
